Behavioral Sciences Department
The field of Behavioral Sciences is widely represented at Vincennes University Jasper Campus, with options for a two-year transfer program leading to an A.S or A.A. degree in Behavioral Science-general option, a Psychology option, or a Sociology option.
Students who enter this field of study will learn basic theories and practices of psychology and sociology; as well as more advanced studies into the workings of the human mind and societal functioning whether normal or dysfunctional.
Students are also offered the opportunity to enroll in classes which provide knowledge in the social work field. These classes teach techniques that will prepare the student to succeed in any environment after transfer and within the field.
Classes such as Social Work Practice teach techniques such as: creating an appropriate professional to client relationship; ice-breaker techniques, which will inspire client trust; and methods to combat career burn-out; as well as other valuable techniques useful to many jobs in the Behavioral Sciences field.
Students are also given the opportunity to help the community while learning valuable money raising techniques. A few of the classes require students to conduct fund-raising events, the profits of which go to charities of the students choosing. These events teach students alternative ways of raising money in a workforce field which sees constant budget cuts.
The abnormal psychology class not only teaches students about the dysfunctions of the human mind, it also gives students an opportunity to tour a state funded mental hospital, and it also prepares students to correctly write research papers in APA (American Psychological Association) style.
No matter what the career choice in the behavioral sciences field, a degree from VUJC in Behavioral Sciences will prepare the student for transfer as well as teach valuable techniques to use once the student has entered the job market.
