Shircliff Gallery

Shircliff Gallery serves and enriches the Department of Art and Design and the public communities of Vincennes and Southwestern Indiana through collections, exhibitions, and special events. With a focus on the visitor experience, Shircliff Gallery presents curatorial and installation projects that challenge and promote discourse surrounding living artists and their works.

Shircliff Gallery exhibitions and speaker programs in the Art and Design Department are made possible in part with a generous grant from the Indiana Arts Commission; the Vanderburgh Community Foundation, a partner of the Community-Foundation Alliance, Inc.: and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency. Additional support is provided by the Vincennes University Foundation.

Vincennes University is an accredited member of the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD). 2020 Vincennes University Juried Student Art Exhibition

May 18 - June 30, 2020

2020 Vincennes University Juried Student Art Exhibition will open May 18 on Vincennes University’s Shircliff Gallery of Art website.  The exhibit will include a juried selection of works from current VU Art and Design Students. The exhibition will run on-line through Tuesday, June 30.  An awards reception  will take place on-line via Zoom  on Thursday, May 28, 7:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. (EST).

This year the student works will be judged by Oakland City University, Professor of Art, Dr. Donna Hazelwood. Best of Show and Merit Awards will be presented in an on-line reception  due to COVID-19 restraints.

2020 Knox County High School Art Exhibition

The Annual Know County High School Art Exhibition will open May 1 at Vincennces University's Shircliff Gallery of Art Facebook Page @ https://www.facebook.com/shircliffgallery/ On-line.  The exhibit will include student work from area high schools.  The exhibition will run through the summer.

The exhibition will open Tuesday, February 18 at Vincennes University’s Shircliff Gallery of Art.  The exhibition will run through Friday, March  20. An artist talk and reception with Orloff and Sanford will take place on Thursday, February 20, 11:00 a.m. -12:00 p.m. (EST) 

Memory and Imagination is an exhibition that examines memory and connections through the recontextualisation of family photographs and found snapshots.

Stepping Through the Past | Leah Gose and Adriane Little

November 5 - December 6, 2019

The exhibition will open Tuesday, November 5 at Vincennes University’s Shircliff Gallery of Art.  The exhibition will run through Friday, December 6. An artist talk and reception with Harding will take place on Thursday, November 14, 11:00 a.m. -12:00 p.m. (EST) 

Stepping Through the Past is a two-person exhibition that takes on maternal loss and recontexutalisation of the past. The imagery presented creates a connection and viewpoint that layers the past with the present. Artist Leah Gose constructs dreamscapes that share family relationships based on shared experiences decades apart, while Adriane Little builds her imagery of visualizing text and image using data mapping to explore the effect of loss.

Material Conversations is a two-person exhibition that challenges traditional perceptions of painting and ceramics.

Katharine Kuharic

August 20 - September 20, 2019

The exhibition will open Tuesday, August 20 at Vincennes University’s Shircliff Gallery of Art.  The exhibition will run through Friday, September 20. An artist talk and reception will take place on Friday, August 6, 11:00 a.m. -12:00 p.m. (EST)

Kuharic’s work is a twisted synthesis of old-fashion American kitsch and contemporary concerns of gender, race, celebrity and the status quo. Her images present simultaneously nostalgia and cynicism; a reanimation, equipped with disembodied limbs and organs, of what it means to be part of American culture.

The exhibition will run through Saturday, April 27.  An opening reception and awards ceremony will take place at the gallery on Tuesday, April 16, 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. (EST).

This year the student works will be judged by University of Southern Indiana in Evansville, Assistant Professor of Art, Rob Dickes. Best of Show awards will be presented in two-categories: two-dimensional medium and three-dimensional medium. FIrst place, second place and honorable mentions will be awarded in the following categories:     Ceramics, Drawing I, Drawing II, Graphic Design I, Graphic Design II, Graphic Design III, Painting, Photography I, Photography II, Printmaking,  and Sculpture/Three-Dimensional Design

Certificates will be presented to all winners. Tri-Kappa Sorority will select up to six students to receive scholarship money contingent on enrollment in the VU art and Design Department in the Fall.

Synthesis | H. Jennings Sheffield and Natalie Tyree

February 12 - March 15, 2019

The exhibition will open Tuesday, February 12 at Vincennes University’s Shircliff Gallery of Art.  The exhibition will run through Friday, March 15. An artist talk featuring both Sheffield and Tyree will take place on Thursday, February 28, 11:00 a.m. -12:00 p.m. (EST)  

Synthesis is a two-person exhibition that takes on two distinctly different approaches to collage art. Lens based artist H. Jennings Sheffield and Graphic Designer Natalie Tyree will present their research in a roundtable discussion.

Selections of the latest artistic research by Vincennes University Art and Design Faculty. This bi-annual exhibition includes work by: Stephen Black, Arthur Fields, Bill Meyer, Pravin Sevak, Brittany Sievers, Sarah Turney and Ron Wise.

Verges | Malcolm Mobutu Smith

November 13 - December 7, 2018

The exhibition will open Tuesday, November 13 at Vincennes University’s Shircliff Gallery of Art.  The exhibition will run through Friday, December 7. An artist talk and reception will take place on Thursday, November 29, 11:00 a.m. -12:00 p.m. (EST)  A student workshop will be held in the Ceramic Studio of the Center for Art and Design from 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Smith’s work is guided by improvisations that merge volumetric form with graphic flatness. His clay work is inspired by the intersections graffiti art, comic books and playful organic abstraction driven by his passion for Hiphop and jazz.

Skimming Boundaries | Lindsey Dunnagan

October 2 - November 2, 2018

The exhibition will open Tuesday, October 2 at Vincennes University’s Shircliff Gallery of Art.  The exhibition will run through Friday, November 2. An artist talk and reception will take place on Tuesday, October 2, 11:00 a.m. -12:00 p.m. (EST)  

Skimming Boundaries investigates the permeable line between this world and what may lie beyond. It explores thee intangible world of the spirit and the boundary that separates us. It is rooted in Dunnagan's experiences with her grandmother, who battled Alzheimer's for the last ten years of her life. Lindsey uses diverse methodologies, including natural dyes to explore ideas of memory and place in her artwork.

Imagined Landscapes | Kalee Appleton and Dana Fritz

August 21 - September 21, 2018

The exhibition will open Tuesday, August 21 at Vincennes University’s Shircliff Gallery of Art.  The exhibition will run through Friday, September 21. An artist talk featuring both Appleton and Fritz will take place on Thursday, September 13, 11:00 a.m. -12:00 p.m. (EST)  

Imagined Landscapes is a two-person exhibition that takes on the age-old subject of the landscape. The landscapes presented create a connection and viewpoint that does not actually exist in reality. Artist Kalee Appleton constructs larger than life backdrops that are digitally created to amuse the senses, while Dana Fritz builds her imagery from multiple negatives in the darkroom that create rich tonal values and quiet solitary spaces.

SWELL | Samantha Parker Salazar

February  13 - March 16, 2018

The exhibition will open Tuesday, February 13 at Vincennes University’s Shircliff Gallery of Art.  The exhibition will run through Friday, March 16. An artist talk by Parker Salazar will take place on Friday, March 16, 11:00 a.m. -12:00 p.m. (EST)  

Awesome and sometimes ominous, Parker-Salazar’s work dominates a space. These large sculptural pieces are primarily created by the painstaking process of cutting and shaping paper. Each slice and fold of paper is an act of construction and deconstruction. With references to contemplative spaces encountered in meditation. This work plays with light and shadow to literally dance around the space causing one to reflect on beauty and destruction.

Ceramics and Photographs | Lesley Baker and Jana C. Perez and Angilee Wilkerson 

January 9 - February 2, 2018

The exhibition will open Tuesday, January 9 at Vincennes University’s Shircliff Gallery of Art.  The exhibition will run through Friday, February 2. An artist talk by Perez/Wilkerson will take place on Thursday, January 11, 11:00 a.m. -12:00 p.m. (EST)  An artist talk by Baker will take place on Thursday, January 25, 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. (EST)

Subtle messages of mass media, perception and identity are covered in this unique conflation of materials. Baker’s creates pieces with a level of subtle social statement, much like how we are presented information through mass media, the true message is not always obvious. The themes include but are not limited to global warming, war, mass media and things that in general are beyond our control. Jana C. Perez and Angilee Wilkerson’s body of work, Perform La Femme is a series of performative self-portraits, often sardonic and curious, that considers the complexities of female identity.

Portraits will open Tuesday, November 14 at Vincennes University’s Shircliff Gallery of Art.  The exhibition will run through Friday, December 15. An artist talk by photographer, Keliey Anderson-Staley will take place on Tuesday, November 14, 11:00 a.m. -12:00 p.m. (EST)  An artist talk by painter, Nathan Madrid  will take place at the Shircliff Gallery on Thursday, November 30, 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. (EST). 

Portraits, is an exhibition of that showcases the portrait in two different media, photography and painting. This exhibition aims to create a conversation on represention and identity in today's climate of social change.

Nature  |  Tom Reed

October 3 - November 3, 2017

Nature will open Tuesday, October 3 at Vincennes University’s Shircliff Gallery of Art.  The exhibition will run through Friday, November 3. An artist talk by painter and master printer Tom Reed will take place at the Shircliff Gallery on Friday, November 3, 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. (EST). 

Reed's artwork is rustic in appearance and in mood. It is often characterized by colorfully muted tree stups, teepees, totem poles and flowers.

Form Follows Function  |  Pravin Sevak

August 22 - September 22, 2017

Form Follows Function will open Tuesday, August 22 at Vincennes University’s Shircliff Gallery of Art.  The exhibition will run through Friday, September 22. An artist talk by VU Graphic Design Professor Pravin Sevak will take place at the Shircliff Auditorium on Thursday, September 14, 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. (EST). 

Rather than design for selling, Sevak prefers educating society with very few words. Good and bad consequences are presented, often ingeniously with symbols.

2017 VU Juried Student Art Exhibition

April 18 - April 29, 2017

The 2017 VU Juried Student Art Exhibition will open Tuesday, April 18 at Vincennes University’s Shircliff Gallery of Art.  The exhibition will run through Saturday, April 29.

The exhibit will include juried selections of work from current VU Art and Design Students. An awards reception will take place at the gallery on Tuesday, April 28, 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. (EST).  

Awards will be juried by Elizabeth M. Claffey, Assistant Professor Art at Indiana University, Bloomington. 

VU President Chuck Johnson will present awards at the reception. The awards given will include purchase as well as Best in Show Awards.

I Feel No Paint II  |  Caleb Weintraub

February 14 - March 17, 2017

I Feel No Paint II will open Tuesday, February 14 at Vincennes University’s Shircliff Gallery of Art.  The exhibition will run through Friday, March 17. An artist talk by Caleb Weintraub will take place at the gallery on Tuesday, February 14, 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. (EST). 

Caleb Weintraub makes paintings, installations, digital prints and stop-motion paintings.  In his recent work, he integrates digital processes with traditional painting techniques to evoke hypothetical realities, dreamscape interpretations of our own fragmented, puzzling, disorienting, and sometimes-senseless world.

Internet Inspired | Ireland, Larson+Shindelman & Massoni

January 10 - February 3, 2017

Internet Inspired will open Tuesday, January 10 at Vincennes University’s Shircliff Gallery of Art.  The exhibition will run through Friday, February 3. An artist talk by Chris Ireland will take place at the gallery on Friday, January 13, 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. (EST). An artist talk with Nate Larson will take place at the gallery on Thursday, February 2, 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. (EST). 

The Internet has made a profound impact on the art world, particularly as a way to capture and disseminate data, both visually and conceptually.  This exhibition seeks to discover how contemporary artists are using it in their creative processes. Topics of identity, isolation, surveillance and appropriation are tackled in this collection of photographic work.

Garret Hansen | HAIL

November 15 - December 16, 2016

Garret Hansen’s HAIL will open Tuesday, November 15 at Vincennes University’s Shircliff Gallery of Art.  The exhibition will run through Friday, December 16. An artist talk will take place in the gallery on November 17, 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. (EST).

Roughly 40% of the population in the US owns a gun and there are enough guns - approximately 300 million - to arm nearly every man, woman, and child in the country.

Reflecting on this fact, photographer Garrett Hansen created stirring images from individual bullets and bullet holes in his exhibition, HAIL. Hail is a combination of several sets of black and white images that deal with the power of the single bullet as well as the broader culture of guns in America.

Jennifer Anderson and Pattie Chalmers: An Exhibition of Drawings and Ceramics will open Tuesday, October 4 at Vincennes University’s Shircliff Gallery of Art.  The exhibition will run through Thursday, November 4. An artist talk with Pattie Chalmers will take place at the gallery on October 27, 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. (EST). An artist talk with Jennifer Anderson will take place with at the gallery on November 4, 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. (EST).

The impact of Anderson’s meditative images around the room are contrasted by the curio-cabinet like narrative tableaus of Chalmers.
