Chemists & Biochemist look for new ways to use substances in practical ways like the clothes we wear, the food we eat, and the house in which we live. In fact, most things that help make our lives better are the result of work done by chemists or biochemists. Their research has resulted in the development of many new and improved products, ranging from authentic-looking “fake” leather to self-adhesive note pads.
As a VU Chemistry major, you’ll use laboratory equipment such as burettes and pipettes, along with digital balances, gas chromatography, infrared spectrophotometer, and other electronic equipment that you many have only seen or heard about. You’ll use computer analysis and experience other procedures through computer simulations
Chemists work in a variety of environments from a laboratory, to academia, to an industry. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects the job growth of chemists to be about average in the next several years and the median annual salaries of chemists is near $75,000.
