August 29, 2017 / VU theatre program will host Red Eye Play Festival, Sept. 29-30

VINCENNES, Ind. - The Red Eye Play Festival is a worldwide collaboration and celebration of new works for young audiences. The event will feature six original ten-minute plays being performed in theatres around the world at 8 p.m. in their respective time zones. From cast selection through rehearsal through performance, the entire event takes place within 24 hours, Sept. 29-30.

The Vincennes University Theatre program will host the Red Eye Play Festival beginning with a reception on Sept. 29 when VU students will be cast to fill the roles in all six plays.

VU is one of nine festival host sites which also include the CAT Theatre in Virginia, AGHS Theatre Company in California, the International School in Stuttgart Germany, and the Rabbits Riot Theatre Company in Ireland.

Playwrights from around the world submitted their works for consideration for the Festival and a jury of theatre professionals serving on the Red Eye Play Festival Selection Committee chose six that would best create a varied and exciting evening of original work.  Guidelines for submission noted that each play could be no longer than ten minutes, be written in English, include 3-6 characters, and have minimal production needs. The plays were also required to be appropriate for general audiences as the festival focuses on plays for young adults.

Rehearsals will begin on the morning of Sept. 30 and continue until show time at 8 p.m.  Throughout the day, host theaters around the world will share pictures and messages via the Red Eye Play Festival Facebook page and Twitter, which automatically stream to the RedEye10s.com website to create a collaborative excitement and connection between the different groups.

On Sept. 30, the Skelton Center auditorium will open at 7 p.m. and the band Sydney Paige and the Midnight Fire will offer a pre-show concert beginning at 7:30 p.m.  The Festival shows will begin at 8 p.m. Admission is free and the public is invited to attend.
