Murphy, Goatee grab wins, records at EIU Friday Night Special

CHARLESTON, Ill. – Vincennes University sophomore Robert Murphy won two events and turned in another VU school record-breaking performance during the Eastern Illinois University Friday Night Special in Charleston, IL. It was the final meet of the indoor regular season for VU.

Murphy and fellow sophomore TaPring Goatee won both the men’s and women’s 1000 Meter Runs and Murphy also claimed the Men’s 600 Meter Run. In the process, the decorated Trailblazer veterans established the new VU marks in the 1000 Meter events.

In addition to the victories by Murphy and Goatee, VU freshman Candela Guijarro won the Women’s High Jump and sophomore Isaiah Thomas capped off his stellar indoor regular season with another Long Jump title.

Other highlights from the EIU meet for VU included sophomore Michael Mest and freshman Kelly O’Shea qualifying for the NJCAA Indoor National Championships in the 1000 Meter Run for the men and women, respectively, and sophomore Blake Marsee improving his national qualifying mark in the Pole Vault with his VU indoor personal-best height.

The Vincennes University Athletic Department hosts Play4Kay and raises donations for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund annually. VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.

Trailblazer Scholarship fund - The VU foundation awarded $970,242.80 scholarship dollars of the VU Foundation and University funds for the 2017-18 school year to incoming and returning VU students.  These included awards to students from 8 states across the country and 3 international awards.

The VU Foundation currently manages over 525 scholarship and department funds, with 247 news funds created in just the last 9 years.
