No. 11 Vincennes University men’s basketball bounces back

MOUNT CARMEL, Ill. – The No. 11 Vincennes University men’s basketball team faced off on Wednesday night against Wabash Valley College.

This game came on the back of the Blazers’ loss to Southwestern Illinois on Jan. 25. VU was quick to set the record straight and bounced back against WVC by winning 86-50 on the road.

VU Statistical Leaders

All of The Blazers’ starters scored in double figures, with a notable performance from freshman Randy Tucker (Rock Island, Ill.) scoring a season-high 22 points as well as five rebounds and four 3-pointers.

Sophomore Craig Porter (Terre Haute, Ind.) chipped in 16 points, 12 rebounds, seven assists, three steals and two blocks.

Sophomore Kevin Osawe (Brampton, Ontario, Canada) added 13 points and eight rebounds.

Sophomores Chinedu Okanu (Gary, Ind.) and Chuka Mekkam scored 12 points apiece. Okanu also had eight rebounds and three blocks. Mekkam hit three 3-pointers and added six assists.

Notes

  • VU remained defensively sound throughout the game, limiting only one WVC player Marcus Garrett to double figures with 10 points.
  • The Trailblazers improved their overall record to 19-3.

Next up

The Trailblazers host No. 14 John A. Logan Saturday, Feb. 1 at 7 p.m. EST in the P.E. Complex and hope to break John A. Logan’s 13-game win streak. VU is 15-0 at home this season.

Play4Kay

The Vincennes University Athletic Department hosts Play4Kay and raises donations for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund annually. VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.

NJCAA spring sport cancellation

The NJCAA announced on March 16 the cancellation of all spring sport competition and all upcoming basketball championships, effective immediately, due to the evolving COVID-19 situation. Spring competition includes all practices, regular season, postseason, and national championship play.

Scholarship Fund

Trailblazer Scholarship fund - The VU foundation awarded $970,242.80 scholarship dollars of the VU Foundation and University funds for the 2017-18 school year to incoming and returning VU students.  These included awards to students from 8 states across the country and 3 international awards.

The VU Foundation currently manages over 525 scholarship and department funds, with 247 news funds created in just the last 9 years.
