T-shirt orders being accepted for Feb. 3 Play4Kay event

The Vincennes University Athletic Department is taking orders for purchasing commemorative Play4Kay T-shirts prior to the annual Play4Kay breast cancer awareness and fund-raising event in February.
Now in its fourth year as a local, VU Athletics-led initiative, Play4Kay has raised more than $11,000 locally for the cause that originated in the memory of former long-time North Carolina State women's basketball coach Kay Yow. Yow died in 2009 after a long battle with breast cancer. She coached the Wolfpack women's program from 1975 until shortly before her death.
VU began local Play4Kay initiatives in 2013 in partnership with The Kay Yow Cancer Fund, the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association and The V Foundation.
T-shirts to mark the Feb. 3 Play4Kay event (during the VU Men's and Women's Basketball Teams' games vs. Southeastern Illinois at the VU P.E. Complex) are $10 each and sales will go toward this year's VU fund-raising goal of $5,000. The deadline for ordering Play4Kay T-shirts is Dec. 18 and orders (including shirt sizes) can be placed by e-mailing VU Athletics Office Manager Lesa Tucker at
As in past years, individual VU departments are encouraged to buy shirts for each employee this year so department members can wear them on Play4Kay game day in a campus-wide display of support and then to the games and activities later that evening. The VU Women's Basketball Team plays at 5 p.m. and the Trailblazer men will take the floor about 7 p.m.
T-shirts celebrating Play4Kay and helping generating awareness of the initiative have been a popular item around VU.
The 2015 Play4Kay initiative at VU generated $5,766.77 for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. In 2014, local efforts netted $3,446.50 while the first-year initiative garnered $2,229.57. Since its inception in 2007, the Play4Kay Cancer Fund's national initiative has generated more than $2.6 million.

Play for Kay Cancer Awareness

The Kay Yow Cancer Fund, in partnership with the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and The V Foundation, is a 501 (c)(3) charitable organization committed to being a part of finding an answer in the fight against women's cancers through raising money for scientific research, assisting the underserved and unifying people for a common cause. Kay Yow was a college head coach for 38 years and past president and founding member of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association. Her name is synonymous with North Carolina State. She is a member of the Naismith National Basketball Hall of Fame and achieved more than 700 career victories. Yow was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987. She passed away in 2009 after an on-again, off-again battle with the disease.
