Top-ranked Vincennes University men’s basketball team pulls away from Kankakee

VINCENNES, Ind. — Sophomore Chinedu Okanu posted a double-double to lead five players in double figures as the top-ranked Vincennes University men’s basketball team opened play in the 30th annual Sodexo Classic with an 83-62 win over Kankakee Community College at the P.E. Complex on Friday.

Okanu (Gary, Ind.) hit 10 of 16 shots from the floor and scored a game-high 22 points, as the Trailblazers improved to 4-0. He also grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds.

Sophomore Colton Sandage (Bloomington, Ill.) added 16 points in the win, while sophomore Craig Porter (Terre Haute, Ind.) scored a season-high 13, freshman Christian Wells (Muncie, Ind.) added 12 and freshman Randy Tucker (Rock Island, Ill.) added 11, all after halftime.

In a game that saw three ties and as many lead changes, Vincennes held a 37-32 advantage at halftime, but put the Cavaliers away with a 13-0 run. The largest Trailblazer lead of the night was 23 points, 83-60, on a pair of foul shots by Wells with 1:53 remaining.

Kankakee led by as many as five points in the early going, but the Trailblazers took the lead for good on a 3-point basket by sophomore Chuka Mekkam (Portland, Ore.), 27-24, with just over eight minutes to play in the first half.

VU Statistical Leaders

  • Porter led the team with five assists and four steals while adding nine rebounds.
  • Sandage added four assists and was perfect in two trips to the foul stripe, where he is 12 of 12 this season.
  • Although he did not score, freshman John Ukomadu (Detroit, Mich.), accounted for two of the Trailblazers’ four blocked shots.

VU Coach Todd Franklin says. . .

“We had some guys who stepped up, and we had some guys who didn’t. We’re just trying to figure it out as we go along.”

“We struggle making any (shots), except (Okanu), who is making shots around the basket and doing a pretty good job of finishing. Other than that, we’re struggling to finish about anything — lay ups and pull ups, everything.”

Notes

  • The Trailblazers are now 55-4 in the Sodexo Classic.
  • The Trailblazers lead the all-time series with Kankakee 38-13, and are 24-4 against the Cavaliers in games played at the P.E. Complex.
  • The Trailblazers turned the ball over only nine times in the win while Kankakee was plagued by 21 turnovers.

Play4Kay

The Vincennes University Athletic Department hosts Play4Kay and raises donations for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund annually. VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.
