Trailblazers get women’s basketball win against No. 21 Georgia Highlands

PANAMA CITY, Fla. -  The Vincennes University women’s basketball team won 86-83 against No. 21 Georgia Highlands at the Gulf Coast Classic on Saturday, a day after the Trailblazers fell 90-67 to top-ranked Gulf Coast State.

VU Statistical Leaders

Against Georgia Highlands, redshirt sophomore Jaynice Stovall (Covington, Ky.) scored a game-high 21 points and dished out six assists. She added five rebounds and two steals.

VU sophomore Fess Hawkins (Bentonville, Ark.) poured in 16 points and grabbed 15 rebounds. She had eight offensive rebounds.

Sophomore teammate Jhala Henry (Jeffersonville, Ind.) contributed 18 points and three steals. VU sophomore Fess Hawkins (Bentonville, Ark.) poured in 16 points and grabbed 15 rebounds.

Freshman Gara Jorge Garcia (Galdar, Spain) rounded out double-digit scoring with 11 points.

Against Gulf Coast, Stovall totaled 18 points, five rebounds, four assists and four steals.

Jorge Garcia was the only other player in double figures. She scored 11 points.


  • The Trailblazers are 2-2 overall.
  • Against Georgia Highlands, VU was ahead 20-14 at the end up the first quarter and up 39-33 at halftime. The Lady Blazers took a 63-54 lead into the fourth quarter.

Next up

The Trailblazers play their home opener against Brescia on Nov. 12 at the P.E. Complex. Tip-off is at 7 p.m. ET.

Play for Kay Cancer Awareness

The Kay Yow Cancer Fund, in partnership with the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and The V Foundation, is a 501 (c)(3) charitable organization committed to being a part of finding an answer in the fight against women's cancers through raising money for scientific research, assisting the underserved and unifying people for a common cause. Kay Yow was a college head coach for 38 years and past president and founding member of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association. Her name is synonymous with North Carolina State. She is a member of the Naismith National Basketball Hall of Fame and achieved more than 700 career victories. Yow was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987. She passed away in 2009 after an on-again, off-again battle with the disease.

Scholarship Fund

Trailblazer Scholarship Fund - The VU Foundation awarded a record $1.4 million scholarship dollars of VU Foundation and University funds for the 2015-2016 school year to incoming and returning VU students.  

These included awards to students from 10 states across the country and 4 international awards.  

Currently the VU Foundation manages over 540 scholarship and department funds, with 259 new funds created in just the last 10 years.
