Vincennes University basketball hosting Sophomore Nights

VINCENNES, Ind. – The Vincennes University men’s and women’s basketball teams will celebrate Sophomore Night on Wednesday Feb. 26 when Southwestern Illinois visits the P.E. Complex.

Sophomore women’s players, Fess Hawkins, Jocelyn Thompson, Jhala Henry, Grace Yocum, and Jaynice Stovall will be honored with a pre-game ceremony prior to the 5 p.m. tip-off.

Eight men’s basketball players will be recognized with a ceremony prior to the 7 p.m. tip-off. Chukka Mekkam, Michael Rogers, Craig Porter, Colton Sandage, Kevin Osowe, Chinedu Okanu, Kevin Kone and Lukanda Teziggwa will be honored.

On Monday Feb. 24 VU will recognize our cheer, dance, and pep band sophomores.

The sophomores of the cheer and dance teams being honored will be Kyle Cates, Daniel Hillman, Lexus Meredith, Lucas Riley, and Abbigail Banks. Pep band sophomores to be recognized are Kolton Gard, Jaydon Edwards, and Austin Hartman.

Wednesday marks the regular-season home finale for both basketball teams.

The Vincennes University Athletic Department hosts Play4Kay and raises donations for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund annually. VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.

NJCAA spring sport cancellation

The NJCAA announced on March 16 the cancellation of all spring sport competition and all upcoming basketball championships, effective immediately, due to the evolving COVID-19 situation. Spring competition includes all practices, regular season, postseason, and national championship play.

Scholarship Fund

Trailblazer Scholarship fund - The VU foundation awarded $970,242.80 scholarship dollars of the VU Foundation and University funds for the 2017-18 school year to incoming and returning VU students.  These included awards to students from 8 states across the country and 3 international awards.

The VU Foundation currently manages over 525 scholarship and department funds, with 247 news funds created in just the last 9 years.
