Vincennes University spikers win two on Sophomore Day

 

VINCENNES, Ind. - Nine Vincennes University sophomore volleyball players went out winners as the Trailblazers took out visiting Lake Land and Frontier on Sophomore Day at the P.E. Complex on Oct. 19. VU improved to 11-1 in the month of October and 21-13 overall by going the distance against Lake Land, 25-16, 18-25, 25-22, 18-25, 18-16 and rolling past Frontier, 25-17, 25-21, 25-21.

VU Statistical Leaders

Sophomore Ryleigh Fidler (Linton, Ind.) finished with 23 kills to lead VU on the day. Sophomore Alison Smith (Oakland, Ill.) added 22 and Grace Doane (Vincennes, Ind.) 17.

Freshman Savannah Grimes (Teutopolis, Ill.) paced the Trailblazers with 40 assists, while sophomore Lauren McCrary (Vincennes, Ind.) came through with 35.

Fidler’s 29 digs were a team-high, while Smith and Grimes were both credited with 26 and sophomore Brantli Lannan Linton, Ind.) had 25.

Doane and sophomore Ryli Bobbitt (Sullivan, Ind.) both had five blocks in the win over Lake Land.

VU coach Gary Sein says . . .

“Frontier plays at a different pace than Lake Land, and we played well enough to win in three sets. The team deserves a lot of credit and has shown a ton of grit and determination for turning around the season as we are now 11-1 in the month of October.”

Notes

  • The Trailblazers have now won nine consecutive matches, and with a record of 21-13, are assured of having a winning season.
  • VU’s final home match of the season will be against Shawnee on Oct. 29.
  • The team will take part in the Regional 24 Tournament on Nov. 1 and 2 at John A. Logan College in Carterville, Ill.

Next up

The Trailblazers travel to Centralia, Ill., for a match against Kaskaskia on Oct. 22.

Scholarship Fund

Trailblazer Scholarship Fund - The VU Foundation awarded a record $1.4 million scholarship dollars of VU Foundation and University funds for the 2015-2016 school year to incoming and returning VU students.  

These included awards to students from 10 states across the country and 4 international awards.  

Currently the VU Foundation manages over 540 scholarship and department funds, with 259 new funds created in just the last 10 years.

Play for Kay Cancer Awareness

The Kay Yow Cancer Fund, in partnership with the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and The V Foundation, is a 501 (c)(3) charitable organization committed to being a part of finding an answer in the fight against women's cancers through raising money for scientific research, assisting the underserved and unifying people for a common cause. Kay Yow was a college head coach for 38 years and past president and founding member of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association. Her name is synonymous with North Carolina State. She is a member of the Naismith National Basketball Hall of Fame and achieved more than 700 career victories. Yow was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987. She passed away in 2009 after an on-again, off-again battle with the disease.
