Vincennes University women's basketball team opens season

SEDALIA, Mo. -  The Vincennes University women’s basketball team kicked off the 2019-20 season at the State Fair Tournament. The Trailblazers opened with a 79-66 win against State Fair on Friday, but fell 61-43 to Kirkwood on Saturday.

VU Statistical Leaders

Sophomore Jhala Henry (Jeffersonville, Ind.) poured in a team-high 23 points against State Fair. Redshirt sophomore Jaynice Stovall (Covington, Ky.) added 16 points and four steals. Freshman Amani Brown (Terre Haute, Ind.) scored 10 points in her debut. Sophomore Fess Hawkins (Bentonville, Ark.) collected 10 rebounds, eight points and two blocks. Anete Bluma (Saldus, Latvia) grabbed 13 rebounds and fellow freshman Ndeye Coudou Ndour (Somone, Senegal) collected eight rebounds.

Against Kirkwood, Hawkins finished with 15 rebounds, including 10 offensive. She also rang up 12 points. Stovall was the points leader with 14 and she added five assists. Henry scored eight points for the Lady Blazers.

Notes

  • Against State Fair, VU blocked five shots and had nine steals.
  • Hawkins, Stovall, Henry, Ndour and freshman Elena Aznar Chamorro (Zaragoza, Spain) started both games.
  • The Lady Blazers are 1-1 overall.

The Trailblazers play in the Gulf Coast Classic in Panama City, Florida Nov. 8-9. VU plays top-ranked Gulf Coast Nov. 8 at 6 p.m. (EST).

Play4Kay

The Vincennes University Athletic Department hosts Play4Kay and raises donations for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund annually. VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.

NJCAA spring sport cancellation

The NJCAA announced on March 16 the cancellation of all spring sport competition and all upcoming basketball championships, effective immediately, due to the evolving COVID-19 situation. Spring competition includes all practices, regular season, postseason, and national championship play.

Scholarship Fund

Trailblazer Scholarship fund - The VU foundation awarded $970,242.80 scholarship dollars of the VU Foundation and University funds for the 2017-18 school year to incoming and returning VU students.  These included awards to students from 8 states across the country and 3 international awards.

The VU Foundation currently manages over 525 scholarship and department funds, with 247 news funds created in just the last 9 years.
