Vincennes University women’s basketball upsets No. 21 Wallace State

MOUNT CARMEL, Ill. – The Vincennes University women’s basketball team earned a huge victory on Saturday as the Trailblazers knocked off No. 21 Wallace State 89-74 in the Wabash Valley College Warrior Classic.

VU also played in the Warrior Classic on Friday, falling 76-71 to Moberly Area.

VU Statistical Leaders

Against Wallace State, the Trailblazers were led by sophomore Jaynice Stovall’s game-high 28 points. Stovall (Covington, Ky.) added five rebounds and three assists.

Sophomore Fess Hawkins (Bentonville, Ark.)  scored 23 points and collected a game-high 14 rebounds. She also had two blocks.

Sophomore Jhala Henry (Jeffersonville, Ind.) finished with 14 points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Freshman Amani Brown (Terre Haute, Ind.) was in double figures with 12 points.

Against Moberly Area, Henry made seven of VU’s 10 3-pointer and rang up 27 points. She also tallied seven rebounds and two steals.

Stovall had 19 points, eight assists and five steals.


  • VU has a 4-3 overall record and two wins over nationally ranked opponents. In addition to beating No. 21 Wallace State, the Blazers defeated Georgia Highlands, which was ranked 21st at the time. VU won 86-83 over Georgia Highlands on Nov. 9.
  • Ahead 39-35 at halftime against Wallace State, VU dominated the Lions in the third quarter. The Blazers outscored them 24-12 for a 63-47 lead.
  • Against Wallace State, VU produced a strong shooting performance by making 30 of 62 shots from the field (48.4 percent).

Play for Kay Cancer Awareness

The Kay Yow Cancer Fund, in partnership with the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and The V Foundation, is a 501 (c)(3) charitable organization committed to being a part of finding an answer in the fight against women's cancers through raising money for scientific research, assisting the underserved and unifying people for a common cause. Kay Yow was a college head coach for 38 years and past president and founding member of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association. Her name is synonymous with North Carolina State. She is a member of the Naismith National Basketball Hall of Fame and achieved more than 700 career victories. Yow was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987. She passed away in 2009 after an on-again, off-again battle with the disease.

Scholarship Fund

Trailblazer Scholarship Fund - The VU Foundation awarded a record $1.4 million scholarship dollars of VU Foundation and University funds for the 2015-2016 school year to incoming and returning VU students.  

These included awards to students from 10 states across the country and 4 international awards.  

Currently the VU Foundation manages over 540 scholarship and department funds, with 259 new funds created in just the last 10 years.
