No. 24 Vincennes University women’s basketball winning streak halted

MOUNT CARMEL, Ill. – The No. 24 Vincennes University women’s basketball team saw the close of its 16-game winning streak against No. 15 Wabash Valley College.

The Blazers lost Wednesday night's road game to Wabash Valley in a close 83-78 battle. This brings VU's record to 19-4.

VU Statistical Leaders

Sophomore Fess Hawkins (Bentonville, Ark.) put up an impressive double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds.

Sophomore Jhala Henry (Jeffersonville, Ind.) contributed 24 points, including five 3-pointers. Freshman Amani Brown (Terre Haute, Ind.) scored 18 points.

Sophomore Jaynice Stovall (Covington, Ky.) finished the night with 11 points, five steals, five assists and two rebounds.

Freshman Elena Aznar Chamarro (Zaragoza, Spain) had 10 points and seven rebounds.

Notes

  • VU took a 58-57 lead into the final quarter against Wabash Valley.
  • Hawkins leads NJCAA Division I in field goal percentage (68.1 percent). She ranks fourth in rebounds per game (14.3 rpg).
  • The Trailblazers are No. 2 in the nation in points per game (89.9) and field goals made per game (34.3). VU is No. 3 in points (2,067).

Next up

The Trailblazers host John A. Logan Saturday, Feb. 1 at 5 p.m. EST in the P.E. Complex. VU owns a 9-0 record at home.

Play for Kay Cancer Awareness

The Kay Yow Cancer Fund, in partnership with the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and The V Foundation, is a 501 (c)(3) charitable organization committed to being a part of finding an answer in the fight against women's cancers through raising money for scientific research, assisting the underserved and unifying people for a common cause. Kay Yow was a college head coach for 38 years and past president and founding member of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association. Her name is synonymous with North Carolina State. She is a member of the Naismith National Basketball Hall of Fame and achieved more than 700 career victories. Yow was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987. She passed away in 2009 after an on-again, off-again battle with the disease.

Scholarship Fund

Trailblazer Scholarship Fund - The VU Foundation awarded a record $1.4 million scholarship dollars of VU Foundation and University funds for the 2015-2016 school year to incoming and returning VU students.  

These included awards to students from 10 states across the country and 4 international awards.  

Currently the VU Foundation manages over 540 scholarship and department funds, with 259 new funds created in just the last 10 years.
