VU Golf finishes as runner-up at RLC Invitational to continue strong spring

WHITTINGTON, Ill. - The Vincennes University Golf Team continued its solid 2015 play when the Trailblazers finished second at the Rend Lake College Spring Invitational Sunday and Monday in Whittington, IL.

Host Rend Lake won the event with a two-round score of 576. VU finished with a total score of 593. Individually, VU's Alex Halter carded scores of 71 and 74 for a total of 145 (1 over-par) and a fifth place showing.

The Trailblazers were in second place after the first round of play, sitting just ahead of John A. Logan, 294-295. However, JAL faded on the second day and opened up some breathing room for VU. The Trailblazers just couldn't catch up to Rend Lake while pulling away from the Volunteers. Still, VU Coach Dennis Chattin was proud of his team's performance.

"This was truly a team effort.  Any of these guys can be low man on a given day which makes for good team chemistry, keeping each other on their toes and also knowing that there is a teammate there to back them up if they're having a tough round," Chattin said. "We had won three in a row so this was tough to not win, but we beat six teams and Rend Lake really fired a nice round at six-under with that (first round score of) 282.  We just have to say, 'a great round there,' and that's why they're ranked No. 6 in the country in Division  II... They had three players under-par for the tournament and that's just tough to beat."

Complete results from the Rend Lake Spring Invitational are as follows:
1. Rend Lake            282        294            576  (even par)
2. VU                         294        299           593
3. Logan                   295        309            604
4. Min Area               305        306            611
5. Lewis & Clark        299        312            611
6. Kaskaskia             329        326            655
7. Lincoln Trail          333        322            655
8. Lincoln                  335        323            658

VU Individual Scores:
Alex Halter              71     74        145
Austin Leonard      74      75        149
Cam Weyer            73      76        149
Jacob Bartley         76      74        150
Palmer Hill             78      76        154

VU returns to action Friday, hosting Oakland City and Lincoln Trail at The Country Club of Old Vincennes. Chattin said the event comes at a very opportune time because it helps the Trailblazers prepare for the rigors of the May 9 and 10 NJCAA Region 12 Tournament in Middletown, OH.

"It's a one-day, 36-hole event that we need because the region (tournament) is a 54-hole tournament with the first day being 36 holes, which is really tough," Chattin said of the VU Invitational.
