VU Men's Basketball pulls away late in 79-61 win at Kaskaskia

CENTRALIA, Ill. - The NJCAA No. 1 Vincennes University Men's Basketball Team endured a slow start and a rugged game in general Saturday to knock off host Kaskaskia, 79-61, in Centralia, IL.

Sophomore Mychal Mulder hit four of VU's five 3-pointers en route to a game-high 20 points. He also had eight rebounds. Sophomore A.J. Patty recorded a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds, while sophomores Charles Foster and Everett Clemons had 18 and 11, respectively.

The Trailblazers (20-0) were cold from the field early on and took more than six minutes to hit their first field goal by scratched their way into a 28-28 tie at halftime. The slow start left VU in  an eight-point hole just over five minutes into the game. The contest was tight enough that it saw the score tied six times and eight lead changes before the Trailblazers finally got things in command.

VU edged the Blue Devils, 38-35 on the boards and hit 28-of-35 free throws - including 17-of-22 in the second half - to outlast Kaskaskia in a rough, foul-marred contest. The Trailblazers also kept their turnover total low at eight miscues.

VU will host Lake Land at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the VU P.E. Complex and then head to Olney Central on Saturday, Jan. 31 for the week's second NJCAA District 16 match-up. That game will be at about 8:30 p.m. ("Vincennes time"), after the VU women take on Olney Central.

Play4Kay

The Vincennes University Athletic Department hosts Play4Kay and raises donations for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund annually. VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.
