VU outfielder Matt Volz wins NJCAA Gold Glove after errorless season

Vincennes University center fielder Matt Volz was named to the NJCAA Region 12 Gold Glove Team for 2015 after he put together a perfect fielding percentage in 45 games to help lead the Trailblazers to the championship game of the Region 12 Sub-District Tournament.
Volz was one of only nine players chosen from throughout the region for the honor. He was one of only two full-time outfielders on the list after he turned in the errorless season.
Volz, a 5-8, 155-pound product of Fort Wayne Homestead High School, manned the center field position for the Trailblazers throughout his two-year career. In 2015, despite a mid-season injury that shelved him for a handful of games, he had 96 putouts and three assists in 99 chances.
“Matt not only continued a string of outstanding players to handle the center field position for us over the last several years, but he was steady and consistent while covering a lot of ground his entire time with the VU program,” VU Coach Chris Barney said. “He made some outstanding plays for us and allowed other players to be more aggressive defensively because they knew he would be there to back them up.
“He also brought some solid sophomore leadership to the field and in team activities off the field this year,” Barney added. “His contributions to VU Baseball go even beyond his Gold Glove abilities in the outfield.”
In addition to his defensive work, Volz hit in various spots in the Trailblazer lineup and hit .250 with 11 stolen bases.
Volz will continue his collegiate baseball career at Indiana University-Southeast next season.
