VU Track & Field closes out 2015 outdoor regular season in impressive fashion

CHARLESTON, Ill. - Freshman Candela Guijarro claimed the Women's High Jump, sophomore Eric Blackman finished in a deadlock for the Men's High Jump win and three Vincennes University competitors improved their individual qualifying marks for the 2015 NJCAA Outdoor National Championship Meet over the weekend when the Trailblazers competed at the Eastern Illinois Twilight Meet. Also, the VU Women's 4X400 Meter Relay Team of TaPring Goatee, Kelly O'Shea, Adelina Vanaga and Hanna Wise qualified for the national meet.

The list of Trailblazers bettering their qualifying marks included sophomore TaPring Goatee, who set a new VU record in the 400 Meter Hurdles. VU Coach Chris Gafner said Goatee's fifth place time of 1:04.82 gives her the school record in her 13th event throughout her VU  career.

The other improved marks for the national championship from the EIU meet were sophomore Ariana Kuhn in the Women's Hammer Throw (162 feet, 1 inch) and sophomore Robert Murphy in the 800 Meter Run (1:51.64).

Overall, VU had 29 top-10 performances in the meet that concludes the Trailblazers' regular season. The NJCAA Outdoor National Championship Meet will be May 14-16 in Hutchinson, KS.

The Vincennes University Athletic Department hosts Play4Kay and raises donations for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund annually. VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.
