VU Women's Basketball improves to 24-3 with 63-38 win over SWIC

The Vincennes University Women's Basketball Team got balanced scoring and held visiting Southwestern Illinois College to just 15 field goals in posting a 63-38 victory Saturday night.

The Trailblazers (24-3) got 17 points from freshman Jeanier Olukemi, while sophomore Nicole Dodd and freshman Brooke Dossett both scored 11 and sophomore Anais Kirvan had 10. Olukemi also had nine rebounds. Dodd knocked down a trio of 3-pointers and Dossett hit two treys. Sophomore Tasia Brewer recorded four steals for VU, which led the entire game.

Adrianna McNeal lead SWIC with 16 points and nine boards.

With the exception of an early second half flurry by the visiting Blue Storm, the Trailblazers held control throughout the contest. Following a first half timeout with about five minutes on the clock, VU scored 13 unanswered points until the run was snapped by a SWIC layup right before the halftime horn. As a result of the stretch, the Trailblazers went to the locker room with a 35-16 lead.

VU was outscored 11-3 over the first five minutes of the second half to cut the lead to 38-27. Olukemi ended the Blue Storm run with a three-point play, and the Trailblazers had the game in-hand shortly past the 8:00 mark when Mikaela Watson's bucket in transition made it 52-32 VU. The Trailblazers eventually led by as many as 27 points late in the game.

VU will travel to Rend Lake Wednesday. Tip-off in Ina, IL, is set for 6:30 p.m. ("Vincennes time"). The Trailblazers then return home on Saturday, Feb. 21, to host Southeastern Illinois in a doubleheader with the women's game starting at 5 p.m. and the men's game following at about 7 p.m. That evening will be VU's annual Play 4 Kay event to generate funds and awareness for breast cancer research. Play4Kay

The Vincennes University Athletic Department hosts Play4Kay and raises donations for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund annually. VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.
