VINCENNES, Ind. - The Dorothy M. Walters Memorial Scholarship Committee of the Vincennes University Foundation has announced that Taylor E. Hambrick, Vincennes, is the scholarship recipient for the 2017-18 academic year.
Hambrick is the daughter of Todd and Amy Allen. She is a 2017 graduate of South Knox High School where she participated in National Honor Society, Interact Club, Forever Friends, RAK (Random Acts of Kindness), newspaper (co-editor), yearbook, Creative Writing Club, and Soccer. Hambrick has been involved in numerous community organizations as well as volunteering for her church’s food pantry and traveling to Kenya, Africa, with the church mission team. She works at Hardee’s and KCARC. Her plans include teaching in a low-income area in Chicago, teaching in the prison system, and then taking her education to Kenya. “I believe everyone is born with a purpose; I am thankful to have found mine,” states Hambrick.
Walters Scholars in Education are outstanding students and citizens who are dedicated to a career in education. As a Walters Scholar the students receive help with tuition, fees, room and board, and books for two years at VU. Upon successful completion of these two years, the student will receive a scholarship for two additional years at VU or another baccalaureate college or university of his/her choice. The amount of this scholarship may not exceed $10,000 per year and will supplement other financial aid that the recipient may receive from other sources.
ABOUT DOROTHY M. WALTERS
Dorothy M. Walters retired after a 48-year year career as an educator. She was a member of the VU class of 1936 and continued her career preparation at Indiana University. She established the Dorothy M. Walters Foundation in Ft. Wayne, Indiana, with the purpose of encouraging and assisting outstanding individuals entering a career in education. The assets of the foundation were transferred to the VU Foundation to support this scholarship. The value of the scholarship awards and the challenging selection criteria place the Dorothy M. Walters Scholarship among the most prestigious available to high school seniors.
In advancing the University’s missions of higher education and community service, the VU Foundation, through the generosity of its donors, administers endorsements and contributions established by corporate and individual gifts as designated. During the 2017-18 school year, the Foundation will have available more than $1.6 million dollars to award in scholarships.
