Lady Trailblazers coast to road win

NOVEMBER 27, 2018 / Lady Trailblazers coast to road win

COLUMBIA, Ky. -- It took the Vincennes University Women’s Basketball team a little over a quarter to get going Tuesday night before coming away with a road victory.

The Trailblazers led 17-16 after the first quarter of play before coasting to a 99-53 win over the Lindsey Wilson Junior Varsity team.

VU improved to 7-3 on the season after its second win of the season over Tuesday night’s hosts.

Freshman Fess Hawkins paced five Trailblazers in double-digits scoring with a game-high 19 points in the win.

The Trailblazers started to click on cylinders in the second quarter, outscoring Lindsey Wilson 30-8 for a comfortable 47-24 lead at the break.

“They gave us a little different look with their lineup and what they did compared to the first time we played them so it took us a little bit to adjust,” VU coach Harry Meeks stated. “They played us pretty tough there in the first quarter and we gave up some easy baskets. But I thought once we made the adjustments, everyone played extremely well, especially there starting in the second quarter.”

The VU offense put up 31 more points in the third period to put the game away, leading 78-41 heading into the final 10 minutes of play.

“I thought the team got better and better as the game went along,” the Trailblazers veteran coach said. “This was a good game for us as we were able to get a lot of our younger kids some added playing time to see what they can do and everyone gave us positive minutes.”

Ivanda Hudjakova scored a season-high 17 points to go along with 12 rebounds.

Freshman Reeva Hammelman scored a career-high 17 points in addition to three rebounds, two assists and five steals. Hammelman’s previous career high was 16 points which she reached in the first two games of the season.

Jaynice Stovall and Jhala Henry rounded out the double-digit scorers for VU with 13 and 12 points, respectively.

Stovall added five assists and six steals, while Hawkins added three rebounds, three assists and three blocked shots.

Grace Yocum tied her season-best with eight points in the win.

“Grace has really been working extensively down in the post and also in the weight room,” Meeks said of his reserve post player. “I thought she gave us a lot of positive minutes when she was on the floor tonight. You could tell all her hard work really paid off.”

The Trailblazers return to action on Saturday. The Trailblazers play host to Rend Lake, inside the P.E. Complex at 5 p.m.
