Trailblazers drop a pair on the diamond

February 17, 2019 / Trailblazers drop a pair on the diamond

CLEVELAND, Tenn. - The Vincennes University baseball team could only produce one run in a pair of games at Cleveland State Community College on Saturday.

The Trailblazers dropped the first game 10-0 in five innings before falling 5-1 in the nightcap.

The losses drop the Trailblazers to 1-4 on the season.

“We just did not get it done this weekend,” VU Coach Chris Barney said. “Tough field conditions, tough situation but both teams had to play in the same thing. Their guys responded well to it, where we did not.”

Cleveland State hurler Ryan Inches bullied the VU offense in game one with a two-hit shutout.

Treven Madden and Will Randell collected the only two hits for the Trailblazers in the loss - both went for doubles.

Kacey Cheek tossed the first three innings and suffered the loss.

The right-handed pitcher allowed five runs - only three earned - while scattering five hits and punching out seven batters.

Cleveland State broke the game open with five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.

The Trailblazers committed four errors in the game.

In game two, the Cleveland State offense picked up where it left off from game one as they scored two runs in each of the first two innings. A single tally in the third inning put VU in a 5-0 hole heading into the fourth.

The Trailblazers ended the shutout bid when Randell lifted a sacrifice fly to leftfield, scoring Ryan Robison, in the top of the sixth.

The VU offense had a little more success in game two, finishing with seven hits.

“We had some opportunities to produce some more, but we just could not cash in on them,” the Trailblazers skipper said.

Walker Paris went 2-for-4 at the dish, with a double.

Trent Weiss, Madden, Tyler Ester, Robison and Luke Stock all collected singles in the loss.

Jacob Cochrum faced 16 batters and suffered the loss on the bump in 2 ⅓ innings of work. The right hander surrendered eight hits, five runs and recorded two strikeouts.

Isaiah Davis, Luke Lancaster and Robison combined for 3 ⅔ shutout innings in relief.

“That was one good positive from the weekend was the job of three guys came in and done,” Barney said of his relievers. “We felt like we had our starting pitchers all ready to go, but they got roughed up a little bit this weekend, but those bullpen guys in the second game really helped keep us in the game.”

Sunday’s game against Cleveland State was canceled due to the threat of rain.

The Trailblazers return to the diamond Friday when they play host to Ancilla at Jerry Blemker Field in the home opener.

The two teams will play a doubleheader starting with a 3 p.m. first pitch.
