VINCENNES, Ind. - Swift response to a campus emergency earned three Vincennes University students certificates of appreciation from the City of Vincennes.

According to Jim Beaman, captain of the Vincennes Fire Department, “The students quickly responded to a second floor kitchen fire at Vanderburgh Residence Hall on May 1, providing early notification, efforts to suppress the fire, and evacuation of the residents. We really appreciate their efforts.”

The students are Sydney Burris, New Castle, a dental hygiene major; Dale Clifton, Rushville, who received his associate degree in law enforcement this spring; and Kenyata Tolbert, Chicago, a zoology major.

Burris and Tolbert are resident assistants in Vanderburgh Hall while Clifton is an assistant director of Harrison Hall, who was visiting Vanderburgh Hall at the time of the emergency.

“Teamwork and training are essential in housing/residential life. These staff members demonstrated the importance of a well trained staff going above and beyond for the residents of Vanderburgh Hall. We are proud of them,” said Dawn Brewer, director of Residential Life.

In addition to receiving certificates of appreciation from Beaman and Vincennes Fire Chief Sonny Pinkstaff, the students also received pins with the official Seal of the City of Vincennes from Mayor Joe Yochum.

“We train a lot for fire drills in the dorms and we all did our part,” Clifton said.

The fire was contained to a kitchen oven after a resident reported seeing smoke coming from it. Quick action by the students lead to an orderly evacuation, contacting the Fire Department, and suppressing the fire with an extinguisher.
